Data scientists with a passion for Philadelphia! Code for Philly invites you to participate in the 2020 Data Hack: Data Science for a Healthier Community. In this data science hackathon, you'll be challenged to come up with answers to help address Philadelphia's opioid crisis. Your goal will be to provide local health organizations with insights that and analyses that help them inform the public about the opioid epidemic in the city of Brotherly Love. Be prepared with advice from our hackathon tips page!

Insurance is the #1 way to recover from disaster. As we see increased flooding along our shores and inland, it is more important than ever before to get through to people and help them BEFORE disaster strikes. We are looking for fresh takes on how to convince people (especially in coastal areas) to get flood insurance, using things like games, video, photos, social media strategy, and other marketing tools. Join us for a full day creative intensive, where you can work with others in your field alongside floodplain managers, emergency professionals, and professional communicators to get things done and have fun in the process! All skill levels and backgrounds are welcome,you don’t need to be a coder to participate in this Hackathon! Just bring a laptop! FAQs What's in it for me? Snacks, lunch, bragging rights and admiration! Winners chosen at the end will recieve formal recognition. What can I expect at the event? Participants are going to get the problem statement, hear some background and context on flood insurance and flood risk from subject matter experts, form groups based on skillsets, and create products to solve the issue. Each group will be able to call on subject matter experts or a facilitator at any point. In the evening, groups will present their products, talk about distribution, and winners will be chosen.

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek ) is a program dedicated to raising awareness about the need to elevate computer science education at all levels and to underscore the critical role of computing in all careers. During CSEdWeek, we will be hosting 3 Hour of Code events, and a Holiday Hackathon . In the Holiday Hackathon, we’re challenging ninjas to bring their coding chops and creativity to develop their own video game for a chance to win fantastic prizes! For kids 7-14, some experience with Scratch required. Kids will work in teams of two to build games in Scratch, using a game template provided by Code Ninjas. In Design Studio 3, gear up to wow the judges during the Makerthon Weekend with your best elevator pitch.   Creating a device is only half the battle, the other half is presenting it to stakeholder and investors. Make sure your presentation stands out from the pack. This workshop goes through best practices for engaging your audience during presentations and pitching. Instead of the classic hackathon focus on software development, a makerthon is where students compete to build innovative hardware solutions for healthcare problems.  The makerthon portion of the Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn is an immersive two-day event to encourage interdisciplinary student teams to develop a simple prototyping project. Groups come together to address an unmet clinical need by prototyping a hardware solution. At the end of the weekend, projects are presented to a panel of judges and awards are presented. Even if you think that you know nothing about healthcare or innovation, the goal of the makerthon is to create cross-disciplinary teams to build hardware and software solutions.
